The subject of this photography collection is about the relationship between people and social space under socialist politics in today’s China. Because of the lockdown in Shanghai during the Covid, the local residents experienced six months of life without leaving their doors. During this period, people and public space were in solitude, which reflects a particular aesthetic and a dictatorship of power over people and space. In this group of works, the empty public spaces were particularly photographed, the lighting was making us not noticing the unusual aspects of the social mechanism, but it brought the public a sense of loss of wandering in an empty city. While in China, the driving force behind such liminal spaces comes from politics. The government tends to control mass communication during special periods by adjusting the social space, therefore, this group of photographs tries to present an social space aesthetics of with Chinese political characteristics, which is directly related to the social interaction of the public.
